Google One subscribers to gain access to a free VPN
Google LLC today announced new security features for all Google One plans, including extending its virtual private network service to all subscribers.
Google One offers users additional storage to use across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. At its base level, it offers 100 gigabytes of storage comparedwith the standard 15 gigabytes offered for free with every Google account, with options to purchase more storage as required.
For most people, Google One is about storage, but Google wants to change that with additional layers of security for peace of mind. Google is doing so by offering all subscribers access to VPN by Google One, a feature that was previously available only on the 2-terabyte Platinum Google One plan or above. The search giant is also introducing a dark web report in the U.S. to help users better monitor their personal information that might be on that shady corner of the internet reachable only with special software.
VPN by Google One is said to provide more protection to users when accessing the internet, no matter what apps or browsers they are using. The service shields internet sessions from hackers or network operators by masking IP addresses.
Google argues that without a VPN, the sites and apps users visit could use their IP address to track their activity or determine their location. The service also takes several additional steps to make sure no one can tie network traffic to a user’s identity.
Google’s new dark web report monitors the hidden web for stolen information, helping users identify personal information, such as their name, address, email, phone number and Social Security number, notifying users if and when their details are exposed. If any matching information is found on the dark web, the service provides guidance to users on how they might protect that information. In one example, if a user’s Social Security number was found on the dark web, the service might suggest it’s reported as stolen to the government and provide the steps required for a user to protect the person’s credit.
Along with the enhanced security features, all Google One plans come with expanded cloud storage, editing features such as Magic Eraser in Google Photos, access to expert support and other benefits across Google.
VPN access for all Google One members is rolling out starting today and will be available to users in 22 countries across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices in the coming weeks. The dark web report will start rolling out to members across all Google One plans in the U.S. over the next few weeks.
